What represents a "Classic"?

Whether it is a movie, or a song, or a piece of art, or a book; a ' classic' represents a timeless message. A message that continues to resonate with people long after most others would be forgotten.  Can a chikdren's book be a classic?   I would like to recommend a children's book that I consider to be a 'classic'!  It is called  "Horton Hatches the Egg."

This delightful, rhyming book tells a poinient yet fun tale of Horton the elephant who was asked by a bird to sit on her egg for a short time while she takes a quick break from her responibility. The elephant reluctantly agrees but winds up stuck sitting on that egg for months; through rain, through cold temperatures and snow, and despite be mocked by his friends. Season after season he sits faithfully on that egg. Then, through an unexpected turn of events, Horton the elephant winds up running into that same lazy,  good-for-nothing bird again, just before it hatches.

The ending will surprise anyone!  The moral of the story is to keep your word no matter what, and in the end, despite possible challenges, you will be rewarded.  "I meant what I said and I said what I meant ... an elephant's faithful one hundred percent!" said Horton.  And in the end, he was rewarded beyond his wildest dreams!  Even though this is a book for the very young, it teaches the timeless message of being true to your word despite discomfort, obstacles and challenges to all of us!
